A network to support urban ecology and enhance biodiversity

Building on the success of the Remix Raingarden project, which was the winner of the 2022 Fishermans Bend Innovation Challenge and then piloted on Turner Street, this project aims to expand its reach within Fishermans Bend, creating linkages between private and public land to enhance precinct resilience and biodiversity. By advocating for an extended treatment chain and bridging gaps between private and public domains, the project seeks to foster a more holistic water management ecosystem.

The new version of the Remix Raingarden (v. 2.0) will use stormwater runoff from a parking lot, pumped into the raingardens alongside habitat enhancements to support urban ecology and enhance biodiversity.  Working with private property owners, council and other stakeholders, the broad vision is to create a network of twelve Remix Raingarden sites through the Fishermans Bend NEIC area (National Employment and Innovation Cluster).

The rain gardens utilise the designed experiments approach, bridging landscape architecture with ecology together and integrating artistic design, scientific function, and biodiversity value through visually appealing research and education units. Regular monitoring and data collection will assess the performance of recycled materials on water quality and biodiversity impact, supported by corresponding signage to engage visitors and employees with the innovative display and WSUD (Water Sensitive Urban Design) significance.

Strategically positioned at critical junctures, these raingardens synergize with storage tanks, utilizing collected runoff to sustain themselves, reflecting the project's goal of fostering a resilient and integrated water management strategy for Fishermans Bend.

FB IDEAs are working with the project team and local stakeholders to implement the first prototype and identify suitable sites for a broader network in the future.
