In March, the team from Anywise hosted an industry consultation and engagement workshop to get input to help refine the VICWORX approach, strengthen collaborative networks and develop a roadmap towards a tangible demonstration project.
The VICWORX Project vision is to develop a collaborative hub in Fishermans Bend that is designed to bolster Victoria's advanced manufacturing and defence technology sectors. Inspired by various innovation and commercialisation models running at a pace faster than normal acquisition cycles, VICWORX will address the challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in accessing the defence market.
The event was attended by over 35 people and represented a broad, diverse mix of SMEs, Primes, Department of Defence Groups, State Government departments, and Industry Associations. The process identified clear challenges, strategic opportunities, and high-impact solutions necessary for establishing VICWORX and helped to shape the roadmap for the next steps to ensure the project's long-term success.
As outlined the Final Report, key insights and recommendations included:
Critical Challenges Identified: Infrastructure limitations, governance complexities, intellectual property (IP) and security concerns, and the need for sustainable funding models.
Strategic Opportunities: The hub’s unique position to leverage government and industry support, foster SME and academic collaboration, and develop a strong talent pipeline.
High-Impact Solutions: Securing sustainable funding, improving transportation links, and establishing a structured Defence engagement pathway to ensure VICWORX delivers long-term benefits.
Moving forward, some key priorities were identified:
Aligning Defence funding streams with SME and industry demand to ensure sustained growth and participation.
Establishing a Victorian Government advocacy group to unify industry voices and drive policy support.
Refining the governance model to balance flexibility, transparency, and industry needs.
Securing a physical presence at Fishermans Bend to facilitate collaboration and innovation.
Expanding industry engagement through targeted outreach and strategic partnerships.
As Anywise CEO, Steven Kouloumendas said:
“My team remains dedicated to advancing this initiative with urgency—securing funding, refining operational models, and ensuring broad and meaningful industry participation. Realising this once-in-a-generation opportunity to position Victoria as a global leader in innovation will require the continued commitment of all stakeholders, united by a shared vision and the will to act.”
